Early Life

Peter Olayinka Sonaike was born on March 16, 1945 to Chief Aiyedun Sonaike (Lerenja of Ipara) and Chief (Mrs.) Oyebowale Sonaike (nee Osinoiki) of the Adumari Ruling family of Ipara Remo, Ogun State of Nigeria.  He is the only boy among five children.


He started his education at Ipara United School in 1950, ending in 1957 with his earning primary school certificate.  From 1958 to 1960 he attended Local Authority Secondary Modern School, Ode Remo, earning the Modern School Leaving Certificate in 1960.  From 1962 to 1964 he attended St. Luke’s Teachers’ Training College Ibadan, where he obtained his Grade II Teachers’ Certificate in 1964.

He attended the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) between 1967 and 1970.  He obtained the B.Sc. Social Sciences (Economics) in 1970 with 1st Class honours.

This first class was the first one ever to be awarded by the Faculty of Social Sciences at Ife since the inception of the University, and it was the only one in the entire university in that year, making him the best graduating student.

He entered the University of Oxford, England in 1971 to study for his doctorate degree in economics and statistics.  He completed this in 1975 and was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (D.PHIL.) of Oxford University.


Peter Sonaike has been involved in teaching from early life.  Immediately after completing his modern school education, he took up appointment as a primary school teacher in Malaolu Village, Ogun State (1961).  When he finished his teacher’s training, he became a primary school headmaster in Kasumu Village, Oyo State (1965-1966).  He also taught at the University of Ife staff School in 1966/67.

When he graduated from Ife, he was immediately employed as assistant lecturer in the department of economics at Ife.  After obtaining his doctorate degree, he went back to Ife as lecturer in economics, statistics and mathematics.  He carried out research and presented papers at learned conferences and published in learned journals.

He left Ife in 1980 to join the International firm of Coopers & Lybrand Associates (Management and Economic Consultants) (Now PriceWaterhouseCoopers) as Consultant and Head of Economics Department.  He became Partner/Director in this firm in 1989 and remained the Head of Economics Department.  He left C&LA in 1995 to become the Principal Partner in Peter & Grace Associates (Management and Economic Consultants).  From there he joined in 2000 the International firm of BDO Professional Services as pioneer Partner/Managing Director/CEO of the consulting department.  He left BDO in 2007 to return to Peter & Grace Associates as Principal Partner.

His extensive and varied consulting experience spanning over 33 years, started at Ife in 1979 where he consulted for a World Bank Mission as a small scale industries expert. Since then he has conducted extensive research and prepared numerous technical reports for international and local organizations such as World Bank, International Labour Organization, (ILO), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the African Development Bank (AfDB), Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Federal Ministry of Industry, Federal Ministry of Water Resources, Federal Ministry of National Planning, Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC),  Nigerian Institute of Oceanography and Marine Research (NIOMR), the Water Boards or authorities of Kaduna, Borno and Lagos States and private sector organizations.

The scope of his technical reports covers public sector reforms, fiscal policy issues, utility tariffs design, planning of agricultural and rural development projects, planning of small and medium enterprises promotion and development policies and initiatives, preparation of commercialization plans for government parastatals, planning of public private partnership programme, development of an input-output model of the Nigerian economy, institutional reviews, project appraisal and feasibility studies, market analysis, financial analysis and corporate and strategic planning.  His sectoral experience includes government services, manufacturing, agro-industry, agriculture, health, utility, energy, finance, tourism and mining.  He has also published three academic books.

In December 2012, he became a professor of economics at ILEPS/Littoral University, Porto Novo, Benin Republic.

Public Appointments

Professor Sonaike has served the Nigerian nation, particularly Ogun State in various capacities over the years.  His public service includes the following:

  • Member, Governing Council of Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, Nigeria for eight years.  (1982 – 1991)  He represented Council on the appointments and Promotions Committee.
  • Director, Ogun State Agricultural Development Corporation  (1970 – 1977)
  • Director, Waterside Rubber Estates Limited (1978 – 1979), representing Ogun State Government.
  • Director, Ilushin Rubber Estates Limited (1978 – 1979), representing Ogun State Government.
  • Member, Ogun State Manpower Committee (1978 – 1979)
  • Director, Ogun State University Investment Company Limited (1985 – 1991)

Spiritual Service

In the spiritual sphere, Peter Sonaike has been very active too.  He was made an Elder in 1987 and ordained a pastor in Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) in 1995.  To the glory of God, he and his wife Grace have been used by God to establish seven churches.  He is now a District Superintendent in CAC.

He is also a high ranking chaplain officer in Global Mission Chaplaincy with the rank of Lt. General.

He has published several religious books: “Success in the Ministry”; “Victory Our Heritage”; “Understanding Spiritual Deliverance”; “Prayer”,  “Kingdom of God: Introduction”; Principle and Practice of Discipleship among many others

Family Life

Professor Sonaike is happily married to Grace Kehinde who was his classmate from 1950 to 1960.  They are blessed with numerous children and grandchildren.  They are also blessed with thousands of children in the Lord.
